4 Questions Your Boss is Going to Ask You About Digital Marketing https://newdigitalnoise.com/4-questions-boss-going-ask-digital-marketing/ https://newdigitalnoise.com/4-questions-boss-going-ask-digital-marketing/#respond Wed, 20 Jul 2016 01:37:19 +0000 https://newdigitalnoise.ndnsocial.com.hk/?p=1401 The post 4 Questions Your Boss is Going to Ask You About Digital Marketing appeared first on New Digital Noise.

Anyone in business knows the higher up you get in a company, the less it is about the little details and more about the digital strategy. But when it comes to digital marketing, many companies want to hear what the return on investment, how it is helping the business, and why they should continue to pay for it. Your boss cares less about the little details and just wants the big picture. Many times your boss will have plenty of prepared questions they want you to cover in your meeting. These questions include:

1. How much is this costing me?

Instead of answering this question point blank, give them the stats first including:

 • What is our cost per lead?
 • How many leads are we generating?

When it comes to these statistics, you are going to want to give them the number of leads your digital marketing efforts are generating and how much you are spending overall. This lets them compare it to their traditional marketing and sales acquisition cost to see if it is better or worse. We suggest you also know these numbers to be able to compare them, in order to come up with a digital marketing budget.

2. What is working?

When it comes to your digital marketing efforts this can be a loaded question. It is best to keep it to terms your boss will understand. Using a bunch of acronyms like PPC, SEOSEM, and SMM can only lead to additional questions. You also want to make sure you are only describing the pieces that are working. You don’t have to include all the modern techniques that have either failed or you are considering trying. If you think it will succeed, your boss will too.

3. Why should I care about digital marketing?

Depending on the type of boss you have, some will care about your digital marketing efforts and others will not. More and more companies are starting to realize the power of digital marketing. But if you have a boss that asks this question, it is best to be prepared with a short simple answer, that is in terms they will understand.

A few example answers could be:

 • Digital marketing is a great way to interact and engage with your customers on a new level.
 • More and more customers are looking online for information about products and services and we want to make sure that our information is available to them.
 • Customers are more likely to purchase from a company that has a current digital presence including social media sites and a blog.

4. How are you making a difference when it comes to our digital marketing strategy?

This may seem like a curveball question and that is exactly what your boss is hoping for, to catch you off your game. Many presenters choose to not touch this question because the answer seems obvious to them. But by not having an answer prepared, your boss may feel he can replace you with someone else who can do it for much less, for example, an intern. This is your opportunity to tell him how you are contributing to the bottom line and how your unique knowledge of digital marketing applies directly to your industry. Your boss will appreciate how you tied back your knowledge specifically to your company’s statistics and industry.

As a digital marketing agency, we have prepared many of our clients for this discussion with their boss. We understand that the higher you go in a company; the more focus is put on the bottom line. That is why we make sure our clients have solid, measurable goals that are set for them to be able to take back to their boss and prove the value of digital marketing.

Sound like what you have been looking for? Contact us today! We can get you the measurable results you have been looking for.

What Is SEO and Should You Care? https://newdigitalnoise.com/what-is-seo-and-should-you-care/ https://newdigitalnoise.com/what-is-seo-and-should-you-care/#respond Thu, 30 Jun 2016 02:00:23 +0000 https://newdigitalnoise.ndnsocial.com.hk/?p=1387 The post What Is SEO and Should You Care? appeared first on New Digital Noise.

Consider this: Google clocks over 2.3 million searches per second and it accounts for a brain-numbing 100 billion searches each month. (Mashable)

Over 60 trillion web pages are indexed on Google at the time of this writing and is expected to grow by the time you read this.

Guess what users are searching for? What did you think accounts for more than 75% of those 100 billion search instances each month?

Your customers are looking for you.

Google search (along with Bing) is where most users start looking for solutions to their problems.

The searches could be as follows:

“California rentals”

“Financial Advisors in Kentucky”

“restaurants in downtown Chicago”

You get the idea, don’t you?

Search Engine Optimization is the art (and science) of optimizing your webpages in such a way that your website gets found when your users begin searching on Google using keywords that are relevant to your business.

So, if you were a realtor in Chicago and if your core business was to help clients sell or buy their homes, you’d optimize your website for any of the following keywords:

“realtor Chicago”

“rentals in Chicago”

“Houses for sale in Chicago”

You’d have more keywords, depending on your business.

Should You Care about SEO?

Google tries to show search users the most relevant, timely, and appropriate results (in the form of web pages) for the searches they make using Google’s search engine, to begin with. Organic search results are trusted and Google tries to match users’ intent as they type in what they are looking for.

If what they type in has something to do with your business, it only makes sense to show up.

For example, take this single keyword phrase “Houses for sale in Chicago”. As on June 2016, take a look at the search volume for that keyword string below.

A award winning graph displaying the number of website visits in Hong Kong.

We guess you don’t need any more convincing as to why you should bother with SEO with more than 2.25 million people looking for real estate related searches in Chicago area.

That’s just an example. No matter what business you run, there are people looking for you every single second.

How to Get SEO right?

As of today, SEO isn’t a separate channel from the rest of digital marketing practices. Search optimization for your website no longer depends only on keywords. In fact, it depends mainly on:

 • The quality of your content
 • The extent of optimization for each page of your website.
 • Mobile-friendliness of your website design.
 • How frequently you publish content [on your blog?]
 • How fast does your website load? [Hint: anything that takes more than 3 seconds to lead is disastrous for your business]
 • How many other websites “link back” to your website? [press releases, other influencers pointing to your website, your customers talking about you on their personal blogs, etc.

SEO is no longer about submitting your website to website directories, keyword stuffing, writing baseless and nonsensical content hoping to get indexed and be found.

Search optimization has evolved over time and a lot goes in to get your website found in search results.

How Social Media Can Help Grow Your Business and Drive Sales https://newdigitalnoise.com/social-media-can-help-grow-business-drive-sales/ https://newdigitalnoise.com/social-media-can-help-grow-business-drive-sales/#respond Sun, 29 May 2016 06:50:10 +0000 https://newdigitalnoise.ndnsocial.com.hk/?p=814 The post How Social Media Can Help Grow Your Business and Drive Sales appeared first on New Digital Noise.

Social media is gigantic, and across all channels, there are more people out there actively engaged on social than the population of China and India combined. According to BrandWatch, there are over 2.3 billion active social media users and more than 91% of retail brands use 2 or more social media accounts to help sustain their brand presence.

About a million new active mobile social users are added everyday (that’s about 12 each second).

Facebook now has over 1.65 billion users. Google+, LinkedIn,Twitter and WeChat have 300, 300, 320 and 800 million users each,

Social media is too important for your business to avoid, but it’s still not “media” in the traditional sense.

As Jay Baer of convinceandconvert puts it, “There’s social in social media” and that’s the central theme of strategic use of the social web for business.

First, a few rules:

1. Spamming is not only allowed on social but it also ruins your reputation.

2. Get social on your networks – manage small talk, make small conversations, and always respond to others.

3. Strive to build your network. Really get to know people, on a first name basis.

4. Share content that you publish (on your blog) and others’ content that relates to your business niche.

5. As for generating leads, develop a systematic workflow that helps you make sense of the chaos that social is. For instance, on rare occasions that you promote your product or service, send social traffic to a landing page.

As a business, here’s what social media can help you grow your business and drive sales (and it’s just now how you think it’d work):

Gain Branding & Impressions

On social networks such as Twitter, magic happens when you start using hashtags within your regular updates. Much like an open room full of people, your Tweet updates with hashtags are like public announcements.

Everyone gets to see what you update, and this is what gets your twitter handle (which is also your business name on Twitter) a lot of impressions.

How does that look like, you ask? Here’s a sample:

In the example above, you’ll notice that it’s a relatively new twitter account but you can see how impressions, number of tweets, profile visits, mentions, and followers grow over time just by keeping your social account active.

Build Relationships

It’s easy to start putting up a string of updates on social media networks, but that won’t fetch you much. Instead, focus on both updates and also building real relationships. As a business, you’ll have a lot of people already mentioning and talking about your brand.

If not, people would talk about the particular problem you solve with products and services. Get talking, provide help, share insights, and work to get to know them on a first name basis.

40:30:20:10 Principle

Of course, you are on social because you want to generate leads for your business. By boosting your branding and impressions, more people get to know about you thereby increasing your chances for generating leads. Then, the actual relationships you build will also help build your pipeline.

To get even better results, use the 40:30:20:10 principle, and this is how it works:

Out of your daily set of social media updates:

 • 40% of the updates should be content that you believe is interesting for your fans and followers.
 • 30% of the updates should your own content ( blog posts, infographics, other media)
 • 20% of the updates can include engagement, small conversations, and more.
 • Only 10% of your total updates should be directly related to generating leads, ads, and more.

Social media demands a lot from you and can only deliver if you keep at it for long, without expecting much from it – that’s the nature of the beast.

How do you use social media for your business? Tell us all about it.

What Is User Experience Design? Interview our UX/UI Designer, Emily Cheung! https://newdigitalnoise.com/user-experience-design-interview-ux-designer-ui-designer/ https://newdigitalnoise.com/user-experience-design-interview-ux-designer-ui-designer/#respond Wed, 11 May 2016 01:30:02 +0000 https://newdigitalnoise.ndnsocial.com.hk/?p=744 The post What Is User Experience Design? Interview our UX/UI Designer, Emily Cheung! appeared first on New Digital Noise.

]]>

1. For the people who don’t know about User Experience, could you please give us a short introduction?

User experience is how you feel when you interact with apps, websites, gadgets and brands, and a UX designer’s role is to optimize this interaction. What apps do you love and why? Is it because of the app’s simplicity and thoughtfulness? Are they easy to navigate and do they add value to your life? To retain your users and customers, UX design is a key business strategy to connect brands with users.

2. What are the tasks usually performed by UX designers?

As UX designers, we:

– Talk to users and business units to understand existing problems

– Conduct stakeholder research to understand business goals

– Analyse direct and indirect competitors

– Define problems, ideate features and solutions

– Create personas and user journeys

– Provide the information architecture and content planning

– Do wireframing, prototyping and user testing for iteration

3. What do you enjoy most about being a UX designer at New Digital Noise?

It is exciting to work on a wide range of projects, from finance and banking to F&B and loyalty programs, but most of all, to create value for different brands and users.

4. What are the biggest challenges?

It is most challenging to align technological decisions/constraints, business goals and user needs. Literally, “user” experience focuses on users, but it is crucial to understand how brands want to create value for users and how software engineers work. Communicating effectively with all disciplines throughout the entire UX process is key to overcoming this challenge.

5. What are some of the most important lessons you’ve learned about interaction design since you started?

Don’t ask users what they want. Users might tell you what they want based on their past experience. What brands and UX designers can do is, based on the insights, explore beyond what users can imagine.

It’s also important not to assume. Don’t assume your users know something or want something. Assumption will lead to strong biases when you ask questions and generate insights. Our practice is to drop all the business goals and technological constraints in mind during user research. You might be surprised by how this can help you achieve and surpass your business goals. *wink*

6. What advice would you give to aspiring UX designers?

Observe. What problems would you want to solve in your daily life?
Understand. Talk to people about the problems and gain insights.
Start your own project and try solving the problems in your own way. Document your process.
Follow and learn from experienced UX designers on Medium, pinterest, dribbble and behance.

How marketing & technology are converging https://newdigitalnoise.com/how-marketing-and-technology-are-converging/ https://newdigitalnoise.com/how-marketing-and-technology-are-converging/#respond Tue, 10 May 2016 10:07:24 +0000 https://newdigitalnoise.ndnsocial.com.hk/?p=203 The post How marketing & technology are converging appeared first on New Digital Noise.

Before today’s digital age, marketing and technology were two separate entities. One dealt with computers and network issues, while the other sought to promote the company/brand to the public. But thanks to today’s increased interested in all things related to technology, marketing and IT are now transforming into one entity, creating a new role – the marketing technologist.

Progressive companies are now utilising the knowledge of a marketing technologist to expand their business in a world fuelled by technology. A marketing technologist is a mix of a variety of things, including a strategist, creative director and technology leader – all combined to align marketing technology with the goals of the business.

Since software reigns supreme as a way to engage customers and prospects, a marketing team now has to choose what type of software they’ll need to maximize results. And with so many different types of software available now, it can be overwhelming as to which one will work best. Then there’s the challenge of configuring and operating it, where an IT person is called in to aid with. This is only part of today’s marketing climate, with social media and digital platforms another aspect of marketing now. Digital budgets are now getting more dollars than ever before and companies are now looking for the best ways to utilize social media to their advantage.

All this technology involved in marketing now can be daunting, which is how the need for a marketing technologist emerged. According to HBR’s articles on “The Rise of the Chief Marketing Technologist,” a company can’t merely split these duties down the middle and assign marketing tasks to the marketing team and IT jobs to their IT department. Instead, the two must be bridged together with it’s own department – one that understand both sides of the spectrum and can easily merge the two for the company’s advantage in their industry. The team must consist of members who are comfortable with both marketing and IT, so to maximize success. It’s becoming impossible to run a marketing department without proper IT knowledge, which is why hiring a marketing technologist is important for a company who wants to thrive in today’s digital business world.

How we built our own Chatbot and why! https://newdigitalnoise.com/how-we-built-our-own-chatbot-and-why/ https://newdigitalnoise.com/how-we-built-our-own-chatbot-and-why/#respond Tue, 26 Apr 2016 05:34:38 +0000 https://newdigitalnoise.ndnsocial.com.hk/?p=670 The post How we built our own Chatbot and why! appeared first on New Digital Noise.

At NDN Group, we are constantly experimenting with new technologies. So, when Facebook announced the launch of the “Chatbots for Messenger”, we decided to build one on own! There was just one problem, what would our bot do?

I mean, if you are a magazine… your bot can show articles. If you are an airline… your bot can help your passengers check-in. But if you are an agency… what is the bot supposed to do?

… and then it hit us!

A few days later, we would be hosting the “NDN Academy” a 4 days digital marketing Bootcamp for the top marketing professionals in Hong Kong. What if we could create a chatbot to interact with them? So, that is what we did!

Messenger Bot start

First one needs to “sign up”

As any good experience, the first part of the journey should be training the user. So we prepared our bot to show short “icebreakers”, in order to engage the user to continue.

NDN Chatbot 1 NDN Chatbot 2 NDN Chatbot 3

In case the user couldn’t come up with anything to ask, we prepared three alternatives in the menu below: “Who are the speakers?”, “What are the 6 Mega Trend?” & “Surprise me!”.

screener_20160426(12_24_02)

If the user asked “Who are the speakers?”. The bot then introduced them shortly with a picture. Here is only one example of our many speakers:

Chatbot Intro First Speaker

If the user asked: “What are the 6 Mega Trend?”, the bot tricked them into being curious about the topic. The answer was never the same!

chatbot answer 1 chatbot answer 2 chatbot answer 3

Cool functions, right? But those were just the fundamentals. By making use of the right infrastructure, our bot was prepared to ask question during the talks, do surveys, , collect results and even see analytics on how many people had the chatbot activate. This and many other features of chatbot building, were only available to the administrators:

Admin Panel

In short, it was an amazing medium to engage our audience. Of course, this is only one of many “use cases”. If you want to find out more about how chatbots can improve your organization, we are the first chatbot building company in Hong Kong!

Like this article? Read “How Bots are taking over Business!” to learn more about the chatbot benefits and uses.

Advertising and marketing in the 21st Century needs to go a lot further than television and radio. Most marketing happens online through social media, your company’s website and anywhere else content can be posted. Content marketing lets you tell your business’s story, promote your brand and connect with your customers in ways that have never been possible before.

At first glance, content marketing doesn’t seem that difficult. After all, it seems like everyone has at least one social media account. Sadly, successful content marketing is very challenging if you don’t have the right tools at your disposal. There are countless such tools available to marketers, and it’s up to you to choose the ones that are the best for your business. Here are some to keep in mind as you begin your content marketing efforts.

Feedly

Feedly has become a great replacement for Google Reader and the perfect choice for RSS with over 7 million users. Just add your favorite blogs and fill your feed with all of the content you will need.

Quora

Quora is a great social network if you need quick answers to any questions you want to ask anyone on the Internet or you want some insight into the latest trends. It’s incredibly easy to use whether you’re simply gathering information or you’re reaching out to potential clients.

Paper.li

People like to think that newspapers are dying, but while physical papers that are delivered door-to-door aren’t so common stories are still regularly printed in millions of papers around the world. Many of these can be curated with Paper.li, a free service that will let you find newspaper articles on virtually any topic from anywhere on the Web.

Buffer

Buffer is all but essential content marketing and social networking tool that lets you schedule posts across Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn. These are all still the biggest social networking sites on the Web, so anything that streamlines how posts are shared across all of these networks will prove to be useful for your content marketing efforts.

Pinterest

Pinterest is sometimes seen as something as something people use to post about their favorite hobbies, but it also makes for a great organization and marketing tool. If nothing else, it can curate content from other sites for you to use as content marketing inspiration.

Google Keyword Tool

Finally, you will still need to find the right keywords to market your content. This is where the Google Keyword Tool comes in handy. The Google Keyword Tool will help you decide what keywords are best to use in headlines and body paragraphs if you want to generate traffic organically from search engine hits. While you should never rely on the data you get from this tool, it will still be a great place to start as you create your content.
